Manali to Leh Route Explained

Manali to Leh Route Explained

The Highway to Heaven

The Manali-Leh Highway is 428 km of pure adrenaline. Here is how to navigate it safely:

Section 1: Manali to Jispa (138 km)

The climb begins. You'll cross the Atal Tunnel (or Rohtang Pass) and descend into the Lahaul Valley. Jispa is the best place to stay for acclimatization.

Section 2: Jispa to Sarchu (84 km)

The toughest day. You'll cross Baralacha La (16,040 ft). Sarchu is high altitude; be prepared for the cold.

Section 3: Sarchu to Leh (250 km)

The final stretch. You'll hit the Gata Loops (21 hairpin bends), cross Nakee La, Lachung La, and the mighty Tanglang La before descending into Leh.

Essential Safety Tips:

  • Carry extra fuel (no pumps between Tandi and Karu).
  • Stay hydrated to fight AMS.
  • Start early to avoid water crossings (nallahs) in the afternoon.
